During the 2018 Third Extraordinary Session of the Louisiana Legislature, the overall state sales tax rate was decreased from 5% to 4.45%. The effective date of the new tax rate is July 1, 2018.

Many types of sales that were subject to a variety of sales tax rates have largely been streamlined to either be entirely exempt or subject to the full 4.45% rate. Sales tax is levied on retail sales, sales of services, the use and rent of personal property etc. If any business collects 5% of sales tax after July 1, the excess must be remitted to the Louisiana Department of Revenue. Also beginning July 1, 2018, a state sales tax rate of 2% is to be levied on any utilities used for business purposes.
